NTU Overseas Project: Burmese migrant workers in Thailand

In August 2011, I travelled to South Thailand on a news project funded by the Lee Foundation through the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, NTU.

I wrote a story on Burmese migrant workers and refugees working without permits in the resort towns lining the southwestern coast of Thailand. These Burmese workers are vulnerable to exploitation and the Thai government has embarked on a registration exercise. However, the deadlines could be too tight for many Burmese migrant workers out at sea in Thai fishing boats, for many weeks.
